Dolphins need to breathe air, but they also need to live in water. that’s a real bummer. As a dolphin your entire life is bound by that fate, no matter how cruel it may be. You can imagine a creature that is in perpetual pain for its entire life and just because evolution had no reason to optimize that out, it’s gonna stay.
…now with a very small stretch of the imagination you can see how you are that creature. yikes.

this came up because my girlfriend was talking about how emotionally susceptible she is (and all humans are) to wind and weather and i think she might have been getting at how much worse it could potentially be and how much that would suck. and i said that there’s nothing about that feeling that prevents her from surviving or reproducing, so evolution has no reason to comment on it.
